Speaker: Dr Jeevan Deol: "Is the Global Jihad Dead?"
Dress Lounge Suit
Venue: The Carlton Club.
Osama bin Laden is dead, and a relentless campaign in the borderlands of Afghanistan and Pakistan has killed or captured most of the al-Qaeda ‘high command’. Al Qaeda was unable to mount another world-changing attack on the scale of 9/11, and most terrorist attacks since then have been the work of small cells or ‘lone-wolf’ individuals. Does this mean that the global jihad is effectively over, or is the rise of new local and regional groups a trend that will endanger global security in new and more complex ways?
Dr Jeevan Deol is the co-editor of : Contextualising Jihadi Thought (Columbia Universiity Press 2012) He is a historian who has taught global history, Indian history and jihadi ideologies at the Universities of Cambridge, Oxford and London, and is a member of the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Council on National Records and Archives. He has appeared widely on television and radio, and has written columns for The Times, The Guardian and the Indian Express.
